Video Creation Help topics: Converting DVD into mpeg for editing
Converting DVD into MPEG for Editing There are several ways to convert a DVD back to MPEG format suitable for input into a video editing program. The way I do it is to use SmartRipper to create VOB files, and then open the VOB files with SoundForge 6.0 and use "Save As" to save them as .mpg. You have to buy an optional mpeg encoder for SoundForge, but the non-pro version which doesn't allow for mpeg parameter changes isn't much.
SmartRipper just rescued a project for me where the DVD authoring was messed up and the video would go back to the title menu after some of the chapters - on only some VCRs! Not the one I tested on and made 50 copies, of course. LOL But using SmartRipper to create VOB files by chapter, the problem was fixed. Using VOBEDIT, the last VOB had an incorrect length and applications would not see the whole file.
